The following maps demonstrate the shifting utilizations of NYC urban structures. The left-hand map shows NYC industrial areas circa 1922, encompassing industries such as textile, leather tanning, food and chemical industries, metal-works etc. The central map shows the current use of the same buildings, as residential, commercial, industrial and more. The right-hand map combines data from both aforementioned maps. It foregrounds the fact that areas which previously housed industries often involving hazardous materials, such as metal-works, chemical and lead-based paint industries, are now heavily populated, serving commercial and residential functions.
